A pointer to the improving economic climate within the construction plant and equipment sector may be seen in the decision by CRH, Cement Roadstone Holdings, to put four new Komatsu crawler excavators to work at their quarries in Dublin, Cork and Waterford.

Supplied to them by Komatsu distributor, McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill - for whom CRH has been a long-standing Komatsu customer – the units comprise of one 70-tonne PC700LC-8 for use at its quarry at Huntstown in West Dublin and three 50-tonne PC490LC-10s for use in its quarries at Feltrim in North Dublin, Mallow and at Cappagh, near Ardmore in Co. Waterford.
With a digging force of up to 362kN (37-tonnes) and bucket capacity up to 5,58 cubic metres, the 433hp PC700LC-8 can handle the hardest working conditions and has set new standards for quarrying and mining equipment.

The 362hp PC490LC-10 – with its up to 10% greater lifting capacity and reinforced undercarriage, has a bucket capacity up to 3.5 cubic metres.
New engine and hydraulic pump control improves operational efficiency and lowers fuel consumption on both models.
Two boom mode settings provide power mode for maximum digging force or smooth mode for fine grading operations.
All machines are fitted with KOMTRAX satellite wireless monitoring system as standard.
Expressing pride at having CRH as one of their showcase Komatsu customers, McHale Plant Sales director, John O'Brien said ‘the positive experience that they have had with earlier machines has been a key influence in their decision to purchase Komatsu on this occasion.’
