15-8-2014 - KOMATSU LAUNCHES NEW THIRD-GENERATION HYBRID EXCAVATOR

Komatsu has launched their new third-generation hybrid hydraulic excavator on the European market.

Bearing the model designation HB215LC-2, the new machine has an increased operating weight of 22,550 kg, a bucket capacity of 1.68 m3 and is powered by a new Komatsu EU Stage 3B engine. High lift capacity, greater stability, a fast and powerful swing performance and improved fuel efficiency are amongst its many attributes.
The hybrid system at the heart of the HB215LC-2 works on the principle of swing energy regeneration and storage. Energy generated during the swing-braking phase is converted to electricity and stored. Then, when accelerating under workload conditions, the stored energy is discharged to maximise machine performance and assist the engine as required.

Since Komatsu became the first to commercialise hybrid construction equipment just six years ago, over 2,500 units have been sold worldwide. In this latest model, hybrid components are covered by a 5 year or 10,000 hours warranty while complimentary maintenance, standard with every new Komatsu EU Stage 3B machine, covers the first three years or 2,000 hours factory-scheduled maintenance provided by trained Komatsu technicians.

High-tech features standard on the new hybrid include KOMTRAX machine monitoring technology and the environmentally-appealing Komatsu Diesel Oxidation Catalyst which removes soot using a system that eliminates the need for a diesel particulate filter.

Operator comfort is accounted for in a new quieter and more comfortable cab fitted with a higher capacity air suspension seat, rear view camera, two 12-volt power ports, stereo speakers that connect to external devices and a high resolution 7-inch LCD colour monitor. Designed for easier serviceability, a 50-point inspection is included at each service. Standard are two additional service valves for use with hydraulic attachments.

Commenting on its introduction, Michael McHale, managing director of Komatsu distributors McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill said ‘driven by the very real tax benefits now available to hybrid buyers, and in light of the many environmentally-sensitive applications that these machines are designed to handle, there has been a detectable interest in these units, especially amongst contractors pitching for work where noise and emissions could be sensitive issues’.
