With plant sales now showing strong signs of recovery, the introduction by Komatsu of their new short-tail PC228USLC-10 hydraulic excavator could not have been better timed.

Said by their Irish distributor, Michael McHale, managing director of McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill to be ‘a machine that updates Komatsu’s product offering in that market segment that demands a machine with the capacity to operate in tight corners’, the more compact PC228USLC-10 is an excavator typical of one that every full-service civil works contractor should have in his fleet.
Capable of operating in the kind of cramped surroundings in which a conventional excavator simply could not work, its clipped tail equips it to work in confined spaces where room for manoeuvre is restricted. The cab section can rotate within the same swing radius as the counterweight while its rounded cockpit design, with sliding door access, gives the operator unrestricted entry/exit, even in confined spaces,
Seen as a machine that takes the proven technology of its predecessor to what Michael McHale terms ‘a new level of advancement’, its features include excellent lift capacity and stability, hydraulic system enhancements and improved operator control and comfort features. Notable amongst its many attributes is a 6.7% increase in horsepower and improved fuel consumption up to 4% lower than the model it replaces.
Noting that the PC228USLC-10 is a machine that can operate ‘without elbow room’, Michael McHale added that ‘the trend towards part-closure road building, infill site development and other like projects will see more machines of its kind being used on Irish projects.’
Advanced electronic control
With an operating weight between 23,800 kg and 24,500 kg, the new PC228USLC-10 is powered by a net 123 kW (165 HP) Komatsu EU Stage IIIB / EPA Tier 4 interim emissions-certified engine. Managed by an advanced electronic control system that oversees airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and other after treatment functions, its specifications include a hydraulically actuated variable geometry turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation valve that deliver improved precision and air management with longer component life.
All major components including engine, hydraulic pumps, motors and valves are exclusively designed and produced by Komatsu. According to their launch information, its diesel particulate filter design provides almost 100% passive regeneration using normal engine exhaust temperatures to clean out the filter without impeding daily operation.
Using closed center load sensing, its hydraulic system has been enhanced to increase efficiency and lower hydraulic loss and fuel consumption. New engine and hydraulic pump control technology improves operational efficiency, speed and productivity.

Ease of Maintenance and Serviceability
Komatsu places strong emphasis on the PC228USLC-10’s ease of maintenance and serviceability with ‘ground level’ access to key service points. The fuel drain valve, engine oil filter, swing machinery and pump drive oil filters are all remote-mounted for easy maintenance. The radiator, hydraulic oil cooler and charge air cooler are mounted side by side, making it simple to maintain and service.
It is quipped with the exclusive Komatsu equipment management monitoring system that continually monitors all critical excavator systems, alerting and guiding the operator should an abnormality occur by means of information displayed on a large LCD colour cab monitor.
For added reliability, DT-type electrical connectors seal against dirt and moisture while metal guard rings protect all hydraulic cylinders. Hydraulic hoses are equipped with O-ring seals to help prevent leaks. Long replacement intervals for hydraulic oil, engine oil and filters reduce maintenance time for added production ready hours.
Greater operator comfort
Inside, cab enhancements give greater operator comfort. The spacious ROPS-certified unit has a reinforced box structure framework and is pressurised and equipped with a standard heated, air suspension high-back operator seat giving excellent support and comfort for reduced fatigue.
The standard high capacity automatic heater cum defroster cum air conditioning system is incorporated into the monitor panel. The radio has a remote mounted auxiliary input for connecting external devices to play music through stereo cab speakers.  Additionally, there are two 12-volt power ports incorporated into the cab and a seat base mounted auxiliary engine shut off switch.
Komatsu Care and Komtrax Monitoring
As with other Komatsu Stage IIIB machines, the new PC228USLC-10 is covered by the Komatsu Care complimentary maintenance programme that, amongst its many benefits, provides up to 3 years or 2.000 hours factory-scheduled maintenance.
It is equipped also with Komatsu’s own KOMTRAX fleet monitoring system which uses wireless technology to transmit machine operating information to a secure website - data that includes operating hours, fuel consumption, location, cautions and maintenance alerts.
Designed to increase machine availability, the KOMTRAX fleet monitoring system reduces the risk of theft, allows for remote diagnosis, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiency and productivity.
A control system critical to the effective operation of the after treatment system is integrated into the machine’s on-board diagnostics systems and KOMTRAX standard telematics system to ensure product reliability and durability in demanding conditions.
