11-3-2012 - GALWAY FIRM ADDS UNIQUE MACHINE TO FARM CONTRACTING FLEET

One the most unique items of farm machinery to go on sale in Ireland - the Merlo MultiFarmer – has been purchased by Ballinasloe-based agricultural contractor Beckett Agri.

Supplied by McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill, main distributor for Merlo in the Republic of Ireland, the MultiFarmer is unique for the fact that it combines the functions of a telehandler and tractor all in one machine. At the front, it has a telescopic boom that can be fitted with attachments to transport silage bales and heavy loads in the normal way.  At the rear, it has a conventional three-point linkage and high powered mechanical PTO that works like a tractor for towing and operating trailed implements.

Based in Kilconnell, nine miles west of Ballinasloe, Beckett Agri was founded by William Beckett, who continues to play an active role in its operations. Today, the firm is one of the country’s leading agricultural contractors whose area of operation extends from Moycullen, west of Galway, to a point east of Ballinasloe and into part of Roscommon.

With the capacity to operate three separate silage outfits at any one time, Beckett Agri has a fleet of 14 John Deere tractors, four Strautmann self-loading wagons, one Claas harvester, numerous mowers, one Volvo and two Komatsu wheel loaders and two McHale silage balers. Away from agriculture, they also maintain three Komatsu and two New Holland tracked diggers which they use as sub-contractors on road construction, pipe laying and similar civil works projects.

For them, the MultiFarmer’s all-in-one features give it added usefulness in large-scale farming situations. Commenting, William Beckett said “the purchase is one that will repay us through increased productivity.”

“We expect it to deliver a significant return in terms of efficiency and by reducing the amount of time we need to complete work, an important factor for any contractor working against the weather” he said.
