OWNERS SHOULD BUY ONLY CE-MARKED MACHINERY – INDUSTRY CAUTIONS

Customers who purchase plant and equipment that does not bear the CE mark could be leaving themselves open to health and safety risks in addition to substantial loss and inconvenience when trading up against a new machine.

That is the cautionary advice being given to customers by plant and machinery distributors, fearful that operators may not be aware of the fact that authorized distributors are prevented from trading in machinery that is not CE certified.

Under EU regulations, all plant sold in Ireland must bear the official CE mark confirming its compliance with relevant EU regulations.

"Back in the 1990s, there was a lot of non-CE equipment about but since then the problem has eased," according to one leading distributor, Komatsu representative John O’Brien, sales director, McHale Plant Sales.

“Nonetheless, it is important for customers to know that frontline distributors like ourselves are prevented from trading equipment that does not meet the CE standard”.

“For that reason, owners who may have innocently purchased such equipment could be exposing themselves to a future loss of one kind or another,” O’Brien said.
